The Growth of Our University Innovation Scholars Program

As we deepen our relationships with emerging entrepreneurs and university students across Alabama and beyond, we’d like to highlight our University Innovation Scholars Program—Bronze Valley’s technology-focused entrepreneurial program for university students.

The University Innovation Scholars Program is a seven-week, immersive experience designed to introduce students to innovation, entrepreneurship, core business processes, and the practical use of technology to build and scale ventures. More than a program, it’s a launchpad—equipping students with the skills, confidence, and network to turn ideas into viable businesses while fostering a culture of innovation on campus.

Program Beginnings and Growth

Since the program’s launch in 2021, we’ve executed seven cohorts with several institutions. Initially it was an extracurricular program held outside of the classroom, but as the program gained traction, we listened closely to feedback from professors and students and saw an opportunity to deepen its impact.

In Fall 2024, we reimagined and expanded the program:

  • Extending its duration
  • Aligning with the academic calendar by beginning after midterms
  • Developing clearly articulated learning objectives and measurable outcomes that integrate directly with course content

By changing to a more formal curriculum, we could help students gain more real-world actionable business skills, and that deepen those learnings.

Embedded in the Classroom

Today, the University Innovation Scholars Program is embedded within six business courses across four universities:

We engage with two universities each semester and work directly with professors to integrate the program into their courses. During the final half of the semester, our team takes the lead in delivering the curriculum and providing students with a truly authentic ‘startup experience’ within their academic framework.

A Curriculum Built for Action

The University Innovation Scholars Program curriculum includes four structured assignments and a final pitch exam. The pitch serves as a capstone experience and accounts for 25–30% of the final course grade, depending on the institution and professor.

Throughout the program, students build foundational entrepreneurial skills, including: problem identification, customer discovery, solution development, minimum viable products (MVP) creation, and effective storytelling and pitching.

Students don’t just learn about high-growth entrepreneurship, they practice it. With guidance from experienced mentors, they ideate and validate their concepts. They experience the real challenges and rewards of building something from the ground up.

Building What’s Next

Our goal is simple but powerful: to give students the opportunity to develop a startup from scratch and transform innovative ideas into viable products or services. We want participants to leave the University Innovation Scholars Program with a clear roadmap, a tested concept, and the confidence to continue building beyond the classroom.

By embedding startup entrepreneurship directly into the classroom, Bronze Valley seeks to shape the next generation of founders and innovators, providing the necessary skills to make their vision and inspiration a reality.

If you're building something innovative, we would love to hear from you.
